Dimscreen is a smart little program that dims the brightness of your screen.
How often are you staring at a screen that’s 3x brighter than room you’re working in? With the recent scientific revelations about the effects of blue light on physical and mental well-being (bright white lights emitted by electronic devices and screens), it’s more important now than ever to dim our screens.
Dimscreen requires no system installation, no reboots – all you have to do is launch the program and adjust it in your taskbar as needed. It won’t startup with Windows or slow your system down in any way, it’s the ultimate minimalist tool for controlling your screen brightness.
One of the best features of Dimscreen is that you can create your own custom hotkeys to enable and disable the program that aren’t the function keys – laptop users will know just how invaluable this can be.
This program will work with any screen, though if you’re running multiple screens you won’t have access to separate brightness levels for each screen. This can be a bit of a drawback but it also keeps the output of your screens level.
Another minor issue is the fact that you’re not able to bind certain brightness levels to hotkeys – only enable and disable brightness settings. This means you won’t be able to save different presets for different kinds of work and you’ll have to go back and manually set those each time you want to do them. Brightness also can only be set in increments of 10%, so no setting your screens at 25% or 4% brightness for example.
Aside from some minor technical issues, Dimscreen dims screens quite well and can help users on laptops and other devices without function keys better control the brightness settings on their computers.

BUG!?
I use serveral shortcut-hotkeys in Windows 10 but they does not work if DimScreen is running.
EXAMPLE:
I have a program-shortcut on my desktop which I can start by pressing the key-combination [CTRL]+[ALT]+[S] (which I defined via shortcut properties peviously). This works perfectly, but only if DimScreen is not running. Is there any global shortcut/hotkey/keycombo override within “AutoHotkey”?

Dimscreen does not actually dim the screen, it only changes the color of windows. If you want to dim the backlight and save energy, use Screenbright or ClickMonitorDDC (with hotkey support)
It works great, but I second Jack’s comment; I also use multiple monitors and doesn’t apply the dimming to the 2nd monitor.
This is a great program. The only issue is it only works for one monitor. I work on two different monitors at a time. How do I do this for both screen?

The program is detected by PunkBuster in online games as “Disallowed Program/Driver [89262]”. So watch out.
But it only kicks from game, not bans, so nothing to really worry about. Just close before gaming.
Dude, you saved me! I have external monitor for my notebook and as many other developers I love working night time. I was tired change brightness from monitor. BTW good idea if you add time schedule, so app will change brightness according day time =) It’s easy to implement but be very useful. Thanks for your work!

This piece of trash permanently dimmed my screen. It froze up and resetting the PC did not return the screen to normal. No process running in the background and opening the program again only adds another layer of dim.
This awesome. Only problem I have is it locks my taskbar, or makes active window always on top. I can’t tell which. Thanks.

If active window is set to full-screen, the hidden mode of the taskbar becomes unusable. (b/c the window will cover the taskbar)

There’s a bug that I noticed. The dimming isn’t working on right click (context) menus, ANYWHERE, be it Chrome or Windows Explorer. Please fix this.

It would be awesome for it to be able to effect all monitors when you use more than one. It only affects one out of three when I used it, so I had to scrap that idea for now. 🙂
Excellent job and this helps so much to work at night or in flight. Especially with the current generation laptops with their screens are very bright even at the lowest setting.

This is wonderful. I use it all the time. I have found a bug though. Every once in a while the entire screen will be black even if on 20%, 50%, 0%.
Hi, I am having trouble getting dim screen to work on Windows 10. After the download there are 5 sub files within the file I downloaded. When I open them it shows me pictures of each part of dim screen. Only one dimmed my screen, but I have no way 2 adjust the brightness percentage.
Any help would be appreciated, and I will be happy to make a donation. As I would really like to use this application, as my eyes are very photosensitive.

Thanks for writing this! Unfortunately, I can’t use it because the dimming rectangle doesn’t cover the right edge of my screen. I have a thin column of undimmed pixels on the right. My 2560×1600 (hi-DPI) and I currently have my scaling set to 160%. Thanks!

Change Display Screen Brightness With DimScreen
Adjusting the brightness of the screen to the current environment has several benefits. The most important ones are a better display quality in the environment you are in, say a dimmed screen at night to avoid too bright screens, and a positive impact a dimmed screen has on the battery of mobile devices.
Most laptops come with programs that offer settings to change the display screen brightness, but many of those programs are everything but lightweight, and some seem to have been developed a long time ago which shows in the interface but also functionality and compatibility.
While you may also be able to use hardware controls on the monitor to change the brightness levels, some monitors tend to generate noise when you do, which they do not if you leave the brightness level at its default value.
Dim Screen
DimScreen is a portable alternative by Donation Coder’s busiest member Skrommel.
The application, like all of Skrommel’s apps, has been created with Autohotkey, which sometimes is recognized as malware by antivirus software.
Note : This application is not malware, and if antivirus software reports that it is, then it is a false positive.
The program provides screen dimming options via hotkey and the system tray. The hotkeys Ctrl+ and Ctrl- on the main keyboard decrease or increase the screen brightness respectively.
Main keyboard in this regard means that the keys do not work on the numpad which is understandable since most notebooks come without it.
Users who prefer to use the mouse to change the display screen brightness can instead locate the icon in the Windows system tray to adjust it.
A right-click on the icon and the selection of a screen brightness percentage from 0% to 100% adjusts the brightness of the screen immediately.

A value of 0% means a screen brightness level of 100%, a value of 60% a brightness of 40% and so on.
DimScreen is an unobtrusive program for the Windows operating system, that is especially helpful for mobile users who want a lightweight program for changing the display screen brightness.
