So, as the title says, What in the world IS a Daily Deviation (DD), anyway?
You know what deviantART says about it, right? Under FAQ #61: What is a Daily Deviation? it says:
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
But, that’s what WE think. And in fact, I dare not even say «we,» because every CV thinks differently. But the point of this article is to find out, what do YOU, the community members, think a DD is? Let’s explore!
Community Insights: What is a DD?
We asked several community members how they would define «Daily Deviation.» Here are their responses:
«To me, a Daily Deviation is an award crossed with feature given to deviations which are unique, interesting, and hopefully something most people on deviantART will enjoy (which is why they’re posted in certain places for all to see).»
«In my opinion it’s a large scale feature, It’s not like an award or something to compete of; it’s more like an opportunity to let all the members of DA see what you can do.»
«Daily Deviation to me is work that is almost seamless, above others in thought and technique. Unique in stature. The kind of piece when someone sees it is inspired to do their own art. Something inspiring creativity. I believe there are many different mediums of this but I know in the past I have seen some Daily Deviations and thought ‘wow I wish I had thought of that idea’. To me that is the true meaning behind something deserving. I see it and I love it and I think, damn I wish I had thought of it, but it is either so unique, different, artistic or something special that inspires me to begin a new piece!»

«In my opinion a Daily Deviation is something kinda ‘perfect’ that has to be stunning in its own category. I am trying to explain better. Of course for a DD I wouldn’t like to see any flaw, everything should be good, but I think at first it has to be something that hits you, that leaves you breathless for the emotions that it makes you feel. Obviously, a conceptual work would be different from a fantasy one; no need to shine or to glow to express a concept. At first this kind of works, like the minimalism manipulations, seem less edited at people eyes, or easy to do. But that doesn’t mean they are not breathtaking. I don’t know if you got what I want to explain. DD= Good technique (not necessarily perfection) + I have to feel something looking at the piece, judging its category. When I think about stocks images, like textures, brushes, pngs. I would give DDs for their utilities. Sometimes, when I search for some stocks and I find what I need I say: This DD is well deserved! I would say that everything I said is also for the other works, like photographies for example, or paintings. I don’t about these arts so emotions are what I would like to feel.»

You got to FEEL something when you watch at it, feel shaken inside. It needs to catch you in the heart. that’s for me more important for a DD than technique itself.»
«To me (when I suggest DD’s) a DD is an art work that both invokes some sort of feeling or sensation in me as a viewer, as well as an artwork that I find well executed, with a good blend of atmosphere & merging of techniques. The subject/theme of the art work itself can vary quite a lot, as I can appreciate the artfulness and great technique even if the subject/theme of the art work is something I would not have chosen myself. A DD is NOT a popularity contest no matter what people tend to say. It is only a way for others to appreciate an art work that another person found worthy enough to share by suggesting it as a DD.»
Synthesis
Some of you think that DDs should be specimens of near-perfection. Others think they should be striking but, more importantly, meaningful. They should be inspiring, thought-provoking, and/or beautiful. All of you seem to feel they should be kept to a standard that is very high but still inspiring enough to be within our reach.
Still, there really is no concrete, hard-and-fast «rule» or «checklist» for what makes a good Daily Deviation. The beauty of dA is that it takes ALL kinds of artists to make it work, and life would indeed be dull if we didn’t give every gallery an opportunity to shine. We will discuss this issue and others in upcoming articles this week!

Guidelines
I will accept Photography, Traditional Art, and Tutorial suggestions!
Tutorials: I am looking for well-organized and helpful tutorials covering any artistic area. I appreciate you explaining why you think this tutorial is a helpful resource when you send the suggestion.
Artists may not receive a DD if they have been given one in the last 6 months. There is not currently a way for you to check on this, so don’t worry about it!
Do not send the same suggestion to more than one CV. This can cause confusion!

The Russian Шерлок Холмс и Доктор Ватсон
Когда мне однажды сказали, что я зря не смотрел фильм “Шерлок Холмс и Доктор Ватсон”, так как сама Королева Елизавета II считала сериал из самых лучших, я не сразу поверил.
А вот зря… Её Величеству так понравился он, что она сделала главного актера почётным членом ордена Британской империи.
Зря ты не верил, Крэйг, very зря.
Ну вот. Меня многажды просили написать пост про ваш сериал. Вот пишу!
После первого эпизода, я решил сравнивать несколько британских версии с вашей и посмотрел несколько. И мне и моему патриотизму стало грустно. Я хорошего сериала (кроме современного, который попкорнуемый, но и у него есть некие недостатки) не нашел.
Знаете, когда смотришь на какую-то работу и прямо чувствуешь отсутствие души в ней? Все старые английские холмсы выглядит как будто их создали так:
— Нам нужен снимать какой-то фильм, любой, в принципе.
— Оригинальной идеи нет, посмотрим уже существующие рассказы.
— Сделаем из Ватсона толстого идиота, чтобы Холмс казался умным.
В этих сериалах нет души, нет харизмы, нет оригинальности. Я думаю можно спросить любого англичанина какие он помнит фильмы про Холмса и он сможет сказать только Sherlock или «эти там с Дауни Джуня».
Cheap, forgettable, lifeless.
А советский сериал наполнен до краев уважением и любовью. Намерение было не «заполнить пустое окошко в расписании», а «создать шедевр». И это видно. Тем более когда сравниваешь его с тв-окошкозаполнявками.
Мне кажется, что сценаристы не знали как показать гениальный разум Холмса и решили сделать Ватсона (который в книге вполне умный и интеллигентный человек) тупым в сравнении. А на самом деле, единственный способ показать какой Холмс гениальный, это когда умный и способный Ватсон удивляется при его способностями! Так и сделали в советской версии.
Он интересный и активный участник в истории, не просто какой-то человек-фон. И директор кастинга (ФИО не мог найти) сделал отличный выбор когда взял Соломина. У него такая английская физиономия, он прямо выглядит как офицер в Британской Армии. Смотрите фото тут.
Так, про самого Холмса… Наши актеры играют его… как сказать… без особого энтузиазма или таланта. И сценаристы плохо пишут его реплики.
В одном из сериалов, получив подарок на Рождество, он говорит «о, Ватсон, ты же знаешь, я обычно не люблю такие стандартные человеческие забавы как подарки, но сегодня, я, пожалуй, поучаствую.»
Про правило «show, don’t tell», они не знали видимо. Ну и как писать реплики, которые похожи на человеческую речь тоже еще не знали.
Все, дальше не буду говорить про британские версии. Никто же давно про них не говорит.
Про саундтрек только могу хлопать ладонями как морской котик. Клавикорд дает нужную атмосферу)) ну и остальные инструменты тоже😊 В. Дашкевич тоже хотел создать что-то настоящее, а не просто «музыку для забываемого сериала».

After news articles explaining ‘The Myth and the Legend’ of the Daily Deviations, how to suggest them, tolerance towards Daily Deviations, the negativity, the focus on the notes and what it actually is, this article tackle the ‘What if. ‘ scenarios that finally come after it all when a Daily Deviation is stolen or you simply (and strongly) don’t approve of a Daily Deviation.
What if.
. you see a Daily Deviation that is stolen?
Replying to people who have commented on the Daily Deviation, or making a comment on the piece itself stating that the piece is stolen won’t lead to immediate action, it’ll just cause more drama instead.
Not only is this a fast and efficient way of having the situation handled, the Community Volunteer will be able to see this immediately and not have to see it hours later if they look at their chosen piece and browse the comments, emphasising the if there as they may or may not do this.
What if.
. a piece that has received a Daily Deviation is not to your liking and you don’t approve of it?
An FAQ that answers this particular question often goes unnoticed, and yet holds some valuable advice:
So, let’s break this down.
«A Daily Deviation is intended to give an artist a chance to be seen by a large portion of the community and as not everyone has the same tastes, it is obvious that you may not appreciate every piece that is selected as a daily deviation.»
Probably the most important part here is that not everyone has the same tastes, and it is perfectly alright to have your own if others are allowed theirs too. We are all human beings with individual interests, and we all have different tastes, so though you may not see what a particular piece of art holds for you, others may be the opposite.
A further point to note is that artwork should be judged within the art category itself. For example, a piece from the Resources & Stock gallery will not be the same as a piece from the Photography gallery. As a result, the standard for both will be different with the former more focused upon the use of it as a resource or stock, and the latter for conceptual and executional value.
«If you have a problem with a particular Daily Deviation feature, do NOT leave your disapproval among the other comments on the piece. It is disrespectful to the artist featured, the person who chose it and/or the person that suggested it.»
You may want to be disrespectful, you may not, but doing so on the deviation itself is a moot point as, most of the time, the artist themselves did not ask to get a Daily Deviation. Therefore, it is futile to rant and rage about why a particular piece does not deserve a Daily Deviation, as, most of the time, the artist did nothing to warrant this behaviour and response except upload their artwork to deviantART.
To sum it up, if you do really want to express your views, you may want to re-think the following:

A tip for suggesting daily deviations is to try and suggest to somebody who is undernoticed rather than somebody who already is noticed. Daily deviations are meant to bring exposure to a piece of artwork.

Hmm. I have in mind that Daily Deviations are «rewards» so to say. That said, the nature of this «reward» is to be earned, not asked for. After all, a DD is chosen keeping in mind the general audience of deviantART. A DD can actually negatively impact the deviant if these were rewarded by just asking for them. Just imagine, you get your DD, but for the next 24 hours you’ll have people ranting to you about how you don’t deserve the feature. It wouldn’t be fair for everyone.
I do believe the group (and others that practice it) should change that policy because one also has to keep in mind the rest of the deviantART members, not just the one begging for the feature.
And as I said before, if anyone wants a DD, you can always self-suggest.
