This guide tells and explain how the cooldown works in CS:GO. Perhaps many of you have at least one cooldown which lasts only 30 minutes, and also some of you have experienced up to 7 day cooldown. New players may need to know about this cooldown system when playing competitive.
Perhaps you might have ‘accidentally’ shot a teammate at the start of the round? Perhaps you may have raged and kept on ‘intentionally’ killing your teammates? This guide explains on how you can get a competitive cooldown based on your actions. This covers up on ways you get cooldown, and the length of cooldown you got.
The aim of this guide is to make you understand how the cooldown system works and what may trigger a cooldown, and how you can avoid a cooldown so you can play without encountering a cooldown.
Please note, that cooldowns will NOT and NEVER removed by steam support. Posting in steam community forums does not help and will lead to comments that won’t help you. In the end of this guide, it also tells you how to avoid a cooldown.
This section explains the duration and length of every cooldown you got. Each cooldown has its own designated level, from 1-4 and above.
The most common one, you will get a yellow bar in your cooldown window.
Least common but increasingly more common due to cheaters, you will see if you got a red bar on your cooldown window. You will only got this if you have reports and convicted by players.
Want to know how come you get kicked? This are the only methods that are known that can result in a matchmaking cooldown.
To get kicked from the match, you need to do at least 200 and more damage to your teammates. The tolerance of damaging your teammates depends on how much enemy damage you gave. The higher damage to your enemy, the more tolerance you will receive on damaging your teammates.
High explosive grenades and Molotov / Incendiary grenades also count towards the team damage. If you have a griefer or troller, avoid using those weapons.
Title explains all of it. You may have killed a teammate at round start maybe because you accidentally clicked your mouse, or you want to get revenge on a very toxic teammate who may have team killed you.
Although you will always get a cooldown when killing a teammate at round start, AWP and SSG08 (IF without armor) kills will NOT result in a cooldown, as long you haven’t done more than 40 damage to your teammates.
You killed more than 3 teammates, regardless to their damage, whether you have done tons of damage or very little damage as little as 1 hp.
You got booted from the match just because you’re AFK. The threshold of you being AFK is 5 minutes, where then you get kicked unless you kept moving or using console commands. Be warned that you may get a griefing ban if frequently AFK since you may get reported for griefing.
You can differentiate from a person thats AFK and a person’s internet timing out. A person timing out will leave the game within 25 seconds, unlike AFK persons will get kicked within 5 minutes.
You probably have been kicked just because you’re trolling your teammates, AFK, or just by ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. You will need up to 7 kicks in a row to get this ban. Being kicked or kicking your teammates count towards the kick count. It is likely you may get a cooldown issued if you are on a level 4 cooldown and above.
You probably kicked your teammate just because he is bad or trying to make you and your teammates derank. You do not need to be the one who initiate the vote, pressing F1 will «count» you towards the limit. You will need up to 7 kicks in a row to get this ban. Being kicked or kicking your teammates count towards the kick count. It is likely you may get a cooldown issued if you are on a level 4 cooldown and above.
Title explains it. You have suicide up to 5 times and hence you get kicked because of it. CS:GO knows you’re trying to troll.
You disconnected in a middle of a competitive game. CS:GO has a 5 minute tolerance where you have time to reconnect to the match. To get a cooldown, you need to pass the 5 minute mark, and when the round ends.
You have been disconnected by the VAC system. This error is very mysterious, however in most cases I have tested, this usually happens when windows was first installed or reinstalled on your computer. The only solution in this case is to wait 5 or more minutes, and hoping you won’t get cooldown before you are able to successfully reconnect. Doing anything else does not help, as far as tested.
In other cases other than a windows reinstall, try verifying your game cache, or you can try typing this command in command prompt
Probably you may have alt-tab after clicking the gigantic ACCEPT button and continue to watch YouTube videos. When you alt-tab, even though you may be able to hear the game sounds, depending on your audio settings, this does not make you seem connected to the game since you need to be in the game to join the designated team.
If your CS:GO freezes, you have 4 and a half minutes to connect. Optimizing your computer should help a lot. A guide is available soon.
So you want to play competitive without getting a cooldown? Here are some of my tips to avoid a cooldown.
Someone being annoying or trolling in your team? No, do not kick the player even if he/she requested to. Just report the player for griefing and he shall get a suspension for about a month. You may get a cooldown
Using your radar, you know where your enemies is so you can avoid giving damage to them. Also, a great team communication can avoid team damage and has a great success on winning.
Avoid using grenades especially high explosive and molotov when there is a griefer, since they can go into your grenade get damage from it, and it counts as team damage.

Why did I receive a competitive cooldown?
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s competitive mode has a number of automated measures in place to ensure that every game is enjoyable for all players. A competitive cooldown may be issued for any of the following reasons:
1) New players can win two games a day until they have completed enough games to calibrate their skill group. Full calibration requires ten wins; this helps the game accurately calibrate skill levels across CS:GO
2) Abusing the kick system; kicking too many players or being kicked from too many games will result in a competitive cooldown
3) Abandoning games
4) Attacking teammates / teamkilling
5) AFKing or otherwise not participating in a game that you have joined
Note: A matchmaking cooldown will be issued regardless of whether or not an infraction was intentional. Explicit warnings are given to players before they commit an action that will result in a cooldown.
How long will my competitive cooldown last?
Competitive cooldowns in CS:GO have four levels. When an account receives a competitive cooldown, the cooldown level remains on the account for a one-week probationary period. Any additional cooldowns received during the one-week probationary period increases the amount of time players are restricted from matchmaking:
A week of clean play will reduce an account’s cooldown level by one. An account whose cooldown level has been reduced to level 2 through clean play would receive a level 3 (24 hour) cooldown on their next infraction.
Please note that cooldown levels can exceed level 4. Players whose cooldown level exceeds level 4 will need an extended period of clean play to have their cooldown level reduce beneath level 3.

Hi, so I’m pretty new to the game. I’ve had it for over 5 years but never really got into it. I’ve started playing it again with two friends as they wanted to get back into it. I’ve been playing competitive games to get ranked so I can play with them but after 2 games today (I won both, currently on 6 wins altogether), I got hit with a 21 hour cooldown. I have a screenshot of it. Apparently this is a level 3 cooldown and honestly, I’m incredibly confused.
I haven’t abandoned any games (that I know of), I haven’t teamkilled more than once or twice by accident, I haven’t afk’d nor tried kicking or suiciding. I consistently come last or second from last on my team but I get carried to wins.
Does anyone know what’s going on? I’m worried that if I win two games tomorrow after my level 3 is done I’ll be given a level 4 and not be allowed to play for a week.

I do not understand why I received competitive cooldown because I received kick from matches, I would have understood if it gives me a maximum of 10 hours but 6 days for something that does not depend on me does not seem normal, all teammates were Russian and friends with each other, I wouldn’t have had anything to do to not get kicked, it’s not a normal thing and I hope it will be solved

Yes, your last cooldowns, you probably deserved them. If what you say is true about this last cooldown then sorry to hear that. Not much you can do. Russians troll, kick, scream and swear for no reason. Over 90% of them are uneducated so they hate others who speak English :/ Try not to use your mic, that’s my trick not to get kicked xD

7 days Cooldown ban is already level 4 Cooldown ban.
how did you in the first place get these Cooldown bans
1) 30 mins cooldown ban (level 1)
2) 2 hours Cooldown ban (level 2)
3) 24 hours Cooldown ban (level 3)
4) your first 7 days Cooldown ban (level 4)
subsequent 7 days Cooldown ban already exceeded level 4 Cooldown ban.
to reduce Cooldown bans that exceeded level 4, you will need more than 1 week of clean play to reduce it to level 3.
for example, you got your 2nd 7 days Cooldown ban, you will need 2 weeks of Clean Play to reduce it to level 3 Cooldown ban.

so first i get my first cooldown on 30 mins for leaving a game in competitive mode, and i can understand that. next i get a 2 hours cooldown, which is my own fault aswell.
after that i get this 1 day cooldown, because «cs:go stopped working» partly my fault too, since it might be a problem with my computer, so i totally formatted my drives.
and now. i was playing a game with my friends, we are almost winning, when i get kicked off the server, fair enough i thought, server problems might happen, and they made this awesome «reconnect to match» botton or something like that, so i did that like 50 times, but the connection time kept running out. I quickly minimized to see if i was still connected to the internet, and i found that i WAS! so i go back in and try 2 more times, only to find that i have been cooldowned for 7 days.
i ticketed this, and i’m looking forward to having my cooldown withdrawn ASAP!
also, when does the ban time get back to like 30 mins again?
The ban level decreases one level after 1 week.
If you abandon 1 game a week or less, you will never get more than a 30 minute ban.
Try to make the crashes or connection problems stop before trying matchmaking again. Even after your week ban.
Type cl_disablehtmlmotd 1 in console, as the message of the day has caused issues for some.
The reconnection issues you outlined sound like a steam error. So you might have to reinstall or repair the steam installation as well.

There have been attempts I’ve seen, with responses from developers in the forums, you could try your luck 🙂 Haven’t heard any successful cooldown cancels from support or otherwise though. Support just say it is automated and their hands are tied, i’m afraid.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, just got 7 days of ban :> And the last ban i had was month ago. So i think theres no way to «reset» your bans.
Here is a developer reply explaining how this can happen:
«
The rules are as follows: every cooldown increases the offense level by one level and after cooldown expires and a clean week goes by the offense level goes down by one level. First level offenders receive a 30 min cooldown, second level = 2 hr, third level = 24 hr, fourth and higher levels = 7 days. The confusion might arise for extreme abusers of the system whose offense level went beyond level 4 now.
Essentially if you got your second or third 7 day cooldown in a row this means you need to have two or three clean weeks after it expires before it goes down to offense level 3 which is penalized with a 2 hr cooldown.
