Mods Install Issue: «An Exception Occurred in the script.»
I did a reinstall of the Nexus Mod Manager since its update and have been reinstalling some mods.
Mod Configuration Menu is a pretty darn important one but every time I try to activate it in the Mod Manager I get the message «An Exception Occurred in the Script.»
Same happens when trying to install Primary Needs Hud.
I’ve tried enabling every permission possible, excluding the files from anti-virus scans, etc. Nothing seems to be working.
Any ideas? (Fix listed Below)
OKAY NEVER MIND EVERYONE!
I found the solution thanks to user ElysianMods.
All you gotta do is Run NMM as Administrator, go to Settings, and «Add Shell Extensions for Supported File Types». Then just restart NMM.
I apologize for making this topic but hey, maybe if someone is having this issue and hasn’t seen ElysianMod’s post on the MCM Posts section, they now will know how to fix it.
Also I apologize for writing all this down here in this comment. I’m really not well versed with how Forums work.
Thanks so much. I have been looking for a solution for like a week now.
I tried what you said, but I can’t seem to get some of the mods to install (example; UIO, and a few others) Are there other reasons why the mods won’t install?
What mod manager are you using?
What error message are you getting? Have you looked at the Windows Eventlog to see if there is a system error at the same time?
To recap with updated info:
As of 08 May 2018, the Nexus has changed some site security to come into compliance with the new «European Union General Data Protection Regulation» (EU GDPR) rules. This breaks older versions of NMM and other tools using the older unsecured API. It is usually reported as being «blocked by the Windows firewall» or causing a «script» or «W3C XML Schema» error installing mods. You will need to update it from NMM on GitHub or this Nexus NMM download page. Check the version numbers between those sites and use the latest (v0.65.4 at this time). Please see this Nexus site news article for details.
A Working «unofficial» fix (confirmed) to login to Nexus with MO (v1) or older NMM versions without updating is available in this Reddit thread: Classic Login fix for MO1/NMM.
Note: this «fix» reverts to using the older, unsecure API at a fixed, no longer used IP address (instead of the address returned using DNS), and thus negates the EU GDPR standard. It could get shutdown without warning 25 May or after as that is the EU deadline for compliance and Nexus is hosted in the United Kingdom. Use at your own risk.
Some people are finding that even after updating NMM to v0.65.4 they still get a «script exception» message when installing some mods (such as UIO and MCM). This seems to be resolved by this suggestion from user ElysianMod:
(Supposedly this fix will be included in the next «unofficial» update to NMM on GitHub.)
Make sure NMM gives your user account the correct permissions.
So: did you update, or try the «workaround» instead?
[Edit: Updated with latest info.]
Mods Install Issue: «An Exception Occurred in the script.»
As of 13 May 2019 all «workarounds» that depend upon continued use of the old API (such as in post #5) will no longer function. That API has been removed, as previously announced more than two years ago. This includes but is not limited to:
* Nexus Mod Manager v0.65.11 and lower
* Mod Organiser 2 v2.1 and lower
* Mod Organizer 1
This only affects their ability to login to and automate the download from the Nexus site. You can still use them to «manage» your plugins with downloaded mods.
Repeating the previous advice (updated):
Some people are finding that even after updating NMM they still get a «script exception» message when installing some mods (such as UIO and MCM). This seems to be resolved by this suggestion from user ElysianMod:
* Run NMM as an «Administrator privileges» account.
* Go to NMM «Settings» (the «double wheeled gear» icon on the menu bar).
* Enable «Add Shell Extensions for Supported File Types».
* Then restart NMM. (You should not need «Administrator privileges» this time.)
(Supposedly this fix is included in update v0.65.12 and later to NMM on GitHub.)
Bottom line: make sure you have updated your manager version. If you still believe you have a problem with an updated NMM, report it as a bug to the GitHub project team.
A possible contributing general problem not directly related to NMM:
* Did you install Steam to it’s default location? If so, please see the wiki «Installing Games on Windows Vista+» article for why the original default Steam behavior of installing games to the «C:\Program Files» or «C:\Program Files(x86)» folder tree was bad (they learned better, and don’t do that any more); and why «disabling UAC and running as Administrator» is NOT sufficient, with instructions how to move it. This is the single most important thing you can do to fix and protect yourself against problems in the future. As much of a PITA as that is, it’s never going to be any easier than now. System updates often cause issues with games installed to these folder trees. Please see the ‘Restoring to «Vanilla»‘ section of the wiki «FNV General Mod Use Advice» article as well.
Disabling «User Account Control» (UAC) only stops Windows from prompting you to grant «administrative» credentials to an application that the system says must have a «UAC elevation». Disabling UAC does not automatically then enable the permission for such applications. Instead, (for all intents and purposes) it automatically denies them. (Please read this MS article on how it works in Win10. The basics have been there since the inception of UAC with Vista.)
i hope i can get help but thats not an option on my NMM!
i cant find add shells and all that
The older Nexus version of the «NMM Manual» is still available, but there isn’t one for the GitHub version.
so i have the nmm comunity edition with the latest update and due to a issue with the vanilla textures i ended up doing a fresh install but then i got an exception occured in the script when trying to install mcm and i googled a fix but heres the kicker i ran it as administrator and clicked settings but there was no add shell extension in the settings and i tried YouTubing it with no avail of finding a decent video and found a reddit post with the issue bu it didn’t go into detail im a step by step instructions kind of guy so ive literally been at this for 48 hours with no sleep can anyone help?
First of all GET SOME SLEEP! Anyone makes stupid mistakes when you are overtired. You won’t read or interpret instructions clearly when tired. This is a game, not life and death. Things will go much more easily after you rest.
Assuming you are correct that you have the latest version of the GitHub NMM (check your installed version number) and that you have followed post #21 above, then you need to ask the maintainers of NMM on GitHub about the missing «Add Shell Extensions for Supported File Types» option. However, first check that you are not getting blocked by Windows because you do not have sufficient privileges.

If you did move Steam out of the default location, then likely any access privilege problem is one of «File and Folder permissions» on the parent «root» folder under which you installed the games. If this is not set correctly to allow at least «System», «Administrators», and «Users» to have «Full Control» then you can’t overwrite other files or make changes. You then (while logged in as an «Administrator Account») need to enable the «Properties | Security | Advanced | Change Permissions» setting of the parent folder to enable the box: «Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object», so those changes get applied to the existing files and sub-folders.

i have windows 7 and i reverted to the last version and still no luck i read the release notes on git hub and it automatically adds it apparently but even when i reverted to the last version it never showed up i have admin privileges and did grant full permission to all of them but still no luck i even tried uninstalling mcm and reinstalling mcm and the weapon mod menu ad still get the same issue
«An error occurred in the script» Mod (re)installation issues
Background:
A few weeks ago, I reset my Windows 10 because I was running into some funky issues with my HP Envy 17’s wireless projection and fingerprint login option. My friend and uncle recommended resetting the OS both to get rid of these issues and because my laptop is now 3-4 years old and can help rebuild any corrupted or lost integrity OS files. So, I also had to reinstall everything on my computer. I only got around to playing Skyrim yesterday, and noticed that my mods weren’t loading up.
NMM recognized my mods as being installed, though I did not see them active in the game. LOOT did not even recognize that I had Skyrim installed. At first I tried disabling and then re-enabling mods in NMM, which didn’t work. I also realized that I needed to reinstall SKSE and tried that. I cannot remember if I had tried to load up Skyrim at that point, but I also actually uninstalled the mods through NMM.
I also realized that since I had to reinstall Skyrim/SKSE, that I had to launch it through steam because since it was newly installed, I hadn’t opened it before for Steam/Skyrim to create registries and all that typical first-time launching of a game. Once I did that, LOOT recognized that I had Skyrim installed on the PC.
At this point, when I was trying to do a «clean install» as my friend suggested by reinstalling Skyrim and the mods, I ran into issues with installing certain mods.
The issue:
Specifically, I am running into what I assess to be security policy permissions issues with installing the following mods:
When trying to install these, I get similar error messages that say something like «an error occurred in the script.» A common detail in the error messages says something like ‘System.Security.Permissions.EnvironmentPermission, mscorlib, Version-4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, Public KeyToken=b77a5c561934e089’ failed.
The only possible solutions I have found online so far is to:
But I don’t understand why I am running into this issue now, when I’ve never had it in the past. A lot of these details and fixes really stretch or go beyond my computer knowledge. I really really appreciate any help to understand what issue I’m having, and how I can fix it. I can also include a list of my original Skyrim mod build/list, plus a complete debug/error code for SkyUI and what little I felt like jotting down for CCO.
My Mod List/Build (The ones I had no issues with (re)installing through NMM):

I don’t have Win 10, but if you have reinstalled the OS it might be that any changes or customisation you had before have been reset to default. Or maybe if you installed new Windows updates from the web they reset security policies.
Win 7 has User Account Control (UAC) which can stop some programs running if they don’t have Admin permission, and Firewalls have to be set to allow some things to access your drive. UAC pops up whenever I try to launch a game, so I click Yes to give it permission.
I have all my games set to Run as Administrator. Some say Skyrim is best installed outside of C:\Program Files (x86) as that folder can have issues with security settings preventing some things running.
Setting permissions and security settings on a folder is similar, but I don’t want to advise on an unfamiliar OS. I did hear a lot about Win 10 having problems with games when it was first released.
Hopefully, someone with Win 10 will reply. If not, you could try on the Win 10 forum about how to set securities and permissions to allow games and mods to run.
So I also read somewhere that a huge issue can be FOMODs in tandem with NMM. Each of the four mods in question do have FOMOD folders with an XML file and a CS Script file. Perhaps the computer’s security policy is not allowing the CS script to run? By I still don’t get why it had never done this before other than Microsoft changed or updated the security policy, or maybe it was reset. But I never remember changing the security policy (since I don’t know how) plus I would figure any Windows updates would have brought up the problem long ago.
I also came across this too, which suggests that the real issue is NMM v 0.35 is not allowing FOMOD installers to work. People have been reverting back to previous versions to get around the issue. In this case the issue could have sprouted up either because my mods were installed before it became an issue, or because I did not have the new version prior to resetting my OS and reinstalling everything, including NMM.
Ansfrida Eyowulfsdottir, Druid Witch Queen of All Skyrim!
Possibly, I do recall some versions of NMM being problematic. But I never use mod managers, I do everything manually. It’s also important to make sure you have the correct versions of mods and SKSE for the Skyrim version you have.
So maybe you could try an older version of NMM?
After that, if it does not work, the other thing (if you’ve not already done it), is post on the mod comments of the ones you’re having trouble with and ask for advice with Win 10 installation and permissions. Just post a brief summary, no need for the entire OP.
I posted some more detailed updates to another thread https://forums.nexus. llation-issues/
In sum, I originally had NMM 0.63.14, so I reverted to the closest one to that I could find, NMM 0.63.15, and I’ve been able to install the troublesome mods. I also loaded up an old save, and at first glance, everything seems in order.
i have the same problem.
I played skyrim months ago and now i installed the game and some problems happen.
Just 2 mods doesn’ work. (Better Magick and SkyUi).
The problem. Win 10 ATT.
My friend use Win 7 and installed the skyrim in the same day and nothing happen.

so long story short ive been screwing with fallout 4 for about a week or two trying to get it to run properly with mods. and it seems whenever i manage to fix something, something else breaks.
i uninstalled both fallout 4 and nexus mod manager from my control panel, deleted any files in fallout 4 or nmm to start from scratch and make sure nothing was left over, re-installed both, opened a fresh unmodded game, and started to re-download all my mods.
everything was going alright so far but then while downloading one mod that worked perfectly fine before but now for some reason doesnt being the configurable fusion core drain mod (yes im a filthy casual who likes to not have to worry about leaving my armor wherever when it drains out, sue me.) a message popped up saying an exception occured in the script with a bunch of other text in the detailes section that i didnt understand a single bit of (im also bad at computer stuff, i just play the games)
I did a reinstall of the Nexus Mod Manager since its update and have been reinstalling some mods.
