What’s a Tool Cupboard?
A tool cupboard, commonly referred to as a ‘TC’, is a very important building item in Rust that will prevent your base from decaying (getting damaged over time) as well as prevent other players from building on your base and close to it.
A tool cupboard is crafted for 1000 wood and every base needs one.
You want to keep it secure as raiders will be looking for it. Put a lock on your TC to keep it extra safe!
Authorisation
Your teammates (or anyone else) will not be authorised to the tool cupboard until they approach it and press E to authorise:
Anyone authorised to the tool cupboard can also deauthorise themselves by holding E and choosing to deauthorise:
Anyone that has access to your tool cupboard can hold E and choose to clear all people that are currently authorised to it:
You will know if you are authorised to the tool cupboard as within its radius it will display «BUILDING PRIVILEGE» in the bottom right above your health bar
How big is my Tool Cupboard’s radius?
The foundations of the building that your tool cupboard is connected to will project the TC’s radius and your building privilege.
Here is the rough visualisation of the TC radius of a square 2×2 base:

Note how the radius is projected by the foundations and not from the point of the tool cupboard!
The radii shown may not be to scale but it is important to note the shape that the privilege makes around the foundations
You can work out where your building privilege lies by running around your base and noting where the green «building privilege» indicator in the bottom right appears and disappears:
Why can people still build on my base when I have a tool cupboard?
Other players that are not authorised on your base can still place twig floors (using a building plan) and wooden ladders onto your base. When players do not have authorisation, the building outline will display orange and it will display «BUILDING BLOCKED» in red in the bottom right as shown here:
If another player tries to place anything besides a floor or a ladder then the building outline will display red and they will be notified privately in chat:
Decay and upkeep
Without a tool cupboard with resources inside your base will start decaying straight away
You can press E on the tool cupboard to bring up its inventory and see the cost per 24 hours of keeping it from decaying:
What adds to my upkeep cost?
The materials used to build the walls, foundations, ceilings, and roofs of your base will all add to the cost of its upkeep as well as the materials used for doors and window pieces. Items placed within your base, however, such as sleeping bags, will not add to the upkeep cost.
This means that a base that is fully stone and has sheet metal doors will only cost stone and metal fragments to upkeep.
How do I know how long is left before my base starts decaying?
Your tool cupboard inventory will display how long your base is protected for:

All separate buildings require a tool cupboard to prevent them from decaying.
Either connect the 2 buildings via foundations or give them separate tool cupboards.
High external walls and decay
High external walls will not decay as long as they are within the radius of a building with a tool cupboard.
High external walls will not add to the upkeep cost for the TC preventing them from decaying
You can prevent walls decaying by creating ‘external tool cupboards’ which are small structures that just have a tool cupboard inside
It is also a good idea to build external tool cupboards to prevent people from building structures just outside of your TC radius to be able to jump over your high external walls
What happens if I run out of upkeep and my base starts decaying?
Bases are like onions, they have layers. When your base starts to decay the outer-most parts exposed to the environment will begin to decay first until they break until the decay reaches the core and the whole base disappears.
Different building materials will decay at different rates once there is no upkeep for them due to their higher health.
Here’s how long each building material takes to fully decay and be destroyed after no upkeep is left for it in the tool cupboard and it begins to decay:
If your base is made out of metal and stone and then your upkeep runs out of stone then only the stone parts of your base will lose health and decay
Grief protection
If your tool cupboard is broken whilst there are still resources inside of it then it will eat up to 24 hours worth of upkeep on being destroyed to prevent the base from decaying until 24 hours later from this point.
This is designed to help you not lose your base when it gets raided (provided that the raiders don’t take it over with their own doors!)
Your tool cupboard is more likely to be broken and consume upkeep if it is locked!
Note how the tool cupboard has fewer resources after being broken due to 24 hours of upkeep being consumed.
Your tool cupboard consuming upkeep is also another good way to prevent raiders from getting all your loot!
Building decaying Rust – Что делать?
Новички часто не знают, что делать в Rust, если видят надпись «Building decaying». В правом нижнем углу экрана она светится красным цветом. Логика вещей подсказывает, что такие сообщения не могут предвещать ничего хорошего по своей природе. Вы столкнулись с проблемой, и её нужно решать.
Переводится эта надпись, как «разложение строения». Так это звучит дословно. Адаптированных версий перевода может быть много. Мне больше всего нравится «гниение постройки». То есть, то здание, которое вы построили для жилья при условии, что внутри стоит шкаф с инструментами, постепенно разваливается. Если шкафа не будет, сообщения вы не увидите, но постройка, тем не менее, продолжит гнить.
Раньше (пару лет назад) процесс гниения был необратим. Каждый день вы обязательно должны были заходить в игру, чтобы отремонтировать гниющие элементы своей базы. Это была абсолютно необходимая профилактика. Исключения составляли лишь те сервера с модами, где устанавливался плагин «Nodecay». Он существует и по сей день, но уже ни так популярен, потому что разработчики сами решили проблему.
Как вы знаете, в игре есть шкаф с инструментами. Это довольно большая деревянная коробка, похожая на холодильник, установка которой запрещает неавторизованным в ней игрокам строиться в радиусе пятидесяти метров. Раньше шкаф нужен был исключительно для блокировки строительства. То есть, банально для того, чтобы к вашему дому никто не смог подстроиться и начать рейдить с крыши или, что ещё хуже, чтобы рейдер просто не залез в окно на втором этаже.
Сегодня в шкаф можно складывать любую разновидность ресурсов, начиная от угля, заканчивая металлом высокого качества. Зачем это придумано? Чтобы предотвращать гниение! Вы складываете в шкаф те ресурсы, из которых построен ваш дом, и он прекращает разваливаться, а надпись «Building decaying» пропадает из поля зрения.
Если вы загляните внутрь шкафа, там вас сообщится, что именно и в каком количестве необходимо, чтобы предотвратить гниение на одни реальные сутки, то есть, на 24 часа. Чем больше ваше строение, тем оно прожорливее. Содержать огромные замки невыгодно.
Building decaying в Rust. Что делать?
Предположим, вы построили дом из камня, установили в нём железные двери и деревянные решётки на окнах. Если положить в шкаф только камень, забыв о дереве и железе, спустя час – полтора реального времени решётки с дверями сломаются. Случиться это может, кстати говоря, прямо на ваших глазах. Если будете внутри дома или поблизости, услышите характерный треск.
После улучшения постройки до уровня камня или железа, кладите в ящик запас соответствующего ресурса, которого хватит на месяц. Учтите, если захочется расшириться, лучше проверьте, как это повлияет на потребность в ресурсах. Возможно, вы сократите время жизни постройки с месяца до одного дня, если расширитесь кардинально.
Шкаф лучше прятать за дверями. Если вы играете на сервере без модов или без плагина «Remove», то за стенами его, понятное дело, лучше не прятать. Особенно, если планируется расширение или привлечение других игроков для создания команды. Без авторизации в ящике они ничего не смогут делать в вашем доме, даже поставить костёр будет невозможно.

This second time I even stoned in a new cupboard where they were building and only authorized myself. Not really into hacks, but could it be a fly hack?
That being said, i really hope then had a way to check who is authorizated in a TC.
23 дек. 2016 в 7:01 I don’t think they had a fly hack. I watched them build up to my roof even when I had the cupboard set there. That’s why I was asking about some sort of building hack that disregards the cupboards you set. I’ll just have to say that’s probably so and keep that mindset when I build my next base. It just sucks cause you’re under the impression that this would be working and people are skirting it somehow. 23 дек. 2016 в 7:16 Cupboards only cover current level and above. so if you placed one on the roof and nothing else they absolutely can build right next to you up to that level. 23 дек. 2016 в 7:18 I set the cupboard on the 3rd floor and one on the first foundation out where they started building and walled it in. I was just wondering if anybody else had similar experiences. The rest of the raid went legit though. They picked through. Maybe it’s a glitch. not even admins can do what your describing, the only way they could have built up as your indicating would be 1 of two ways.
first they grabbed your TC and ran away when u werent watching. secondly would have been a spook raid on you where they blew in grabbed the TC and rebuilt what they destroyed then left only to come back later. did you wipe the building permission?
on a side note, are you sure the admin wasnt raiding you. he could have just no clipped your building, grabbed the tc, then gone back outside to make it look legit. this is the only 3 ways to do what your describing, I’d call admin abuse

На самом деле не все так плохо, как кажется на первый взгляд, и сколько бы игроки не «кричали», не оставляли гневных комментариев, им все же придется смириться и принять игру такой, какая она есть на данный момент! not rly even that, they have mini copters now so ppl can just land inside your walls. Most ppl just build a strong, bunker-style base and make it so its at least more expensive to raid than it is worth. If you want to know how to build a bunker base, just google it. plenty of videos out there with lots of different designs. just make sure you use current videos, lots of things get changed.

yes sir, that would be hard to a SOLO PLAYER right? I don’t find anybody to team up with. Also, how do i know a server is wiped weekly or monthly? Thanks again.

caves are the only viable option in rust currently
with underwater bunkers being nerfed since you can no longer build super far out of the map.
the mini copter is far to broken to build above ground anymore high walls are pointless. ladder prevention methods are pointless. and with HV rockets being so dam OP against turrets, turrets are mostly pointless aswel, there is just no point in even trying to build an actual base on land.
telling you this right now, you build above ground you are going to get raided.
