Really need help trying to fix this error. Pc starts to sound like jet engine and turns off randomly.

you should read the posts in this link, and then is necessary repost with details, and one other thing windows 10 32 bit is not really recommended for any workstation from the z820 up if possible please upgrade to a 64 bit OS

Sorry was writing this while panicing.

It is a Z4 G4 wokstation and it has a intel core i9 7980XE with a 2080 TI GPU. It happens everytime i am running games. The PC suddenly become loud and turns off and then this screen shows up. I have updated bios and even switched the slot the gpu sits in. It is a 928 Fatal Pcie error.

which power supply is installed? the stock 750 watt one or the upgraded 1000 watt one

the 2080TI pulls around 250/280 watts and that’s over the HP recommended wattage for a video card on the stock supply for most g4 z4 configured systems

for a comparison, the HP offered NVIDIA Quadro RTX 8000 card draws just under 300 watts and hp strongly recommends the 1000 W chassis if you plan on packing the system with dual cpu’s lots of ram and several drives

the 750 W chassis can power a 2080TI if low power cpu’s are used and about half of the ram slots or less are filled and just two HD’s are installed

note that you can not just install the upgraded power supply in a 750 watt system, you also need to replace the graphics wiring harness cable with the 1000 watt chassis cable which has more AUX GPU connectors

z820 928-Fatal PCIe error

We have a HP Z820 workstation that displays this error multiple times every day: «928 fatal PCIe error».

I think this error is due to an incorrect PCIe version setting on a particular PCIe slot. For example, if you are using a PCIe 3.0 GPU or device on a PCIe 2.0 lot, that slot needs to be reset to PCIe 2.0.

Check the z820 slot specifications by slot number and see if any slot is populated with a card that does not match the slot speed configuration and then modify the setting for that slot to match the card.

I have the same issue (and it can take a couple of reboots to get it back).

Latest BIOS Nvidia with a GTX 1070 (PCIe 3.0 x16 card) in slot 2 (which is the slot with the 928 error)

What are the BIOS settings for Slot 2?

I’ve seen a number of posts that suggest fairly common issues with older series systems when using a Pascal GPU. These are always followed by the suggestion to update the BIOS and chipset driver to the latest.

This is probably not relevant to the issue, but the listing of the PCIe slot configuration in the z820 specs is a bit odd:

2 PCI Express Gen3 x16 slots

1 PCI Express Gen3 x16 slot- Available ONLY when 2nd CPU is installed.

1 PCI Express Gen3 x8 slot- with x16 connector- Available ONLY when 2nd CPU is installed.

1 PCI Express Gen3 x4 slot- with x8 connector

1 PCI Express Gen2 x4 slot- with x8 connector

1 PCI 32bit/33MHz slot

1 Mechanical- oly slot, supporting cards which mount only to the I/O bulkhead and not the motherboard (half length, full height)

The PCIe x8 connectors are open ended, allowing a PCIe x16 card to be seated in the slot.

As each Xeon E5 supports 40 PCIe lanes in the z820, it seems to me that two GPU’s could run at x16 with a single CPU.

I installed a PCIe card from National Instruments that will be used to communicate with hardware. Regardless of what card I use, everytime I try to use the PCIe card to communicate with something the Workstation restarts and shows the error message:

928-Fatal PCIe error. PCIe Poisoned TLP error detected on Slot 114. B:30 D:2 F:0

The following steps were done in order to troubleshoot if the card is the problem:

1. check if the PCIe card is seated properly in the x8 slot, it was.

2. Second, I transferred the card to x16 slot and still the same error.

3. Use the card on a different PC and it works fine.

Please advise how to proceed.

there is very little you can do. unless the card has onboard firmware that can be updated it appears that this card is not compatable with your workstation

you will have to try another venders or perhaps a diffrent card model from this vendor

is this a IEEE interface card?

I think it could be because of this, from the manual of PXIe-8381:

no, the number of pci-e lanes is not a issue as long as you have the card installed in a working x8 or better slot

if you install the card in a x4 slot this might be the cause of your bus errors

i have a z820 and i need to have a second cpu installed to enable 2 of the pci-e slots

PCIe x16 Gen3 Slots (3rd 4th Slot available ONLY when 2nd CPU is installed)

the z840 dalso has this limitation, so you need to make sure the card you are using is installed in a working x8 slot

in a single cpu setup the z840 only has slot #6 available for this card

slots1/5/7 are either x1 or x4 (slots 3, 4 if sec cpu installed are x8/x16)

Might I be missing out on some BIOS setting to make it compatible with a 32 bit PCI card? (does anyone know for sure?) Or is this likely a hardware issue? I’ve tried the same thing on a few z440s with differnt cards of the same model and am getting the same result, but want to avoid having to order 20+ addiitonal cards (£9,500 extra) for my estate wide Win10 upgrade project.

After I installed the card (I put in slot 6 on my z820) I booted up the machine and it rebooted itself and upon boot up gave me this error

928-Fatal PCIe error

PCIe error detected Slot 6

tried moving the PCIe card (LSI-9280 8e) into slot 1, which I determined was the appropriate slot for the card, as slot 6 is x16 and slot 1 is x8.

But when I rebooted I had the same problem. The system rebooted itself and gave the same error. Any thoughts on why this might be and how to proceed?

Have you made a support call at all and had a case created?

So the only cards that we have tested in the Z840 are the LSI 9270 and the 9217.
That is not to say that your card will not work, but it isn’t officially supported as it was never tested.

First thing to check is to ensure the firmware of your card is up to date.

My machine is actually a Z820, not sure if that make a difference. I wasn’t able to install any firmware for the card as I couldn’t get the machine to run stabily without the machine rebooting itself. I have since pulled the card and stored it temporarily as I attempt to troubleshoot this issue.

I tried to submit a support case but sadly my warranty expired in April. Is there anyway to open a case without a warranty?

One lead I had been given via another support forum was to run BIOS and change the PCIe gen to 2.0 for the slot which the card is installed as its possible in windows 10 that the slot is set to auto/3.0. Do you have any thoughts on that being the cause of the problem?
